Sea to Strategy: The Journey of Capt. Arun Modi
From 15 years at sea to leading from shore, Captain Arun Modi brings the same precision, resilience, and human touch from the bridge to the boardroom at MOL.

"There were times I covered 10 ports in just 18 days - discharge cargo, set sail, repeat,” he recalls. Long hours on the bridge. Relentless operations.
"You're constantly alert. Every country has different regulations, and one oversight can set everything off course. That's where precision becomes second nature." The shore might run on schedules. The sea runs on instinct.

"My family was sailing with me, and we celebrated my elder daughter's 2nd birthday on board. The crew turned it into a celebration I'll never forget.”
In the middle of nowhere, far from land, surrounded by ocean - he found home. "That day wasn't about duty or deadlines. It was about being human, together."

"The Sunday biryani, New Year's Eve parties, the way the entire crew came alive after weeks of discipline."
And the sea breeze.
"Fresh air, clean environment - the chances of falling sick were close to none."
His favourite port?
Singapore. "I've been to many countries, but that one still tops the list."

An old-school music lover, he's a fan of Rafi, Kishore, Mukesh and sings too. "I've performed on many occasions. Music is where I unwind."
If he hadn't become a mariner?
"I would've been an engineer," he smiles. But destiny clearly had other charts in mind.

At MOL, he is admired not just for what he knows but for how he makes others feel seen and supported. Because true leadership is not just about steering ships. It is about anchoring people and knowing when to let the music play.
